Helping Communities to

Embrace FOGO

As councils across Australia work towards halving organic waste sent to landfill by 2030, the roll-out of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) services have become a key focus. Implementing these programs comes with unique challenges, from navigating collection in Multi-Unit Dwellings (MUDs) to educating diverse communities. At Good for The Hood, we specialise in helping councils tackle these hurdles head-on.

Why FOGO Matters

FOGO plays a crucial role in reducing landfill waste, lowering emissions, and creating nutrient-rich compost. But success depends on proper usage and community buy-in. That’s where we come in: empowering councils to effectively engage and educate their residents.

Making FOGO a Success: Our Work with City of Parramatta

When the City of Parramatta prepared to launch its FOGO program, we partnered with them to create a tailored community education initiative. This included:

  • Recruiting FOGO Champions: Engaging over 100 local residents to act as trusted messengers within their communities.
  • Delivering Targeted Training: Hosting in-person and online sessions to teach residents the “what” and “why” of FOGO, as well as how to inspire their neighbours to participate.
  • Providing Accessible Resources: Developing tip sheets to accompany bin room signage, and other collateral like badges, t-shirts and pamphlets.

Through this program, we addressed key community concerns, and increased awareness across culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups.
